St. Francis House was established in 1984 in a response to a lack of day time support and services to Boston's poor and homeless population. As the largest day shelter in New England, they work to provide basic services, access to medical care, mental health counseling, job skills training, transitional housing, and other supportive services to over 800 people daily. They believe that homelessness is an experience not an identity and offer the help and hope people need as they work to rebuild their lives.

The Art Connection is partnering with St. Francis House and their guests to design and paint a community mural for display in Downtown Crossing in 2010. Engaging in the planning and creation of a mural for their greater community is not only a benefit for their "home," but also an expression of their presence and the talents they have to offer when given a chance. Design workshops are now complete.

A Community Input Event was held on January 14, 2010 to invite the greater community to help us brainstorm themes and ideas for the project. Suggested themes included: crossroads, meeting places, diversity, city life, Boston landmarks, and people connecting.
